IGH3P® Professional Accreditation

Professional Coaching Standards

The professional competencies, ethical responsibilities and standards of practice that underpin credible, responsible and effective coaching and mentoring within the IGH3P® professional framework.

Professional Competence

More Than Training & Coaching Hours

Professional coaching competence is demonstrated through the way knowledge, skills, judgement and ethical responsibility are applied in practice.

IGH3P® expects professional coaches and mentors to develop and maintain competencies that support effective communication, client awareness, purposeful development, appropriate professional relationships and responsible practice.

These standards form part of the wider professional framework supporting IGH3P® accreditation and professional recognition.

The Competency Framework

Four Areas of Professional Coaching Practice

The individual competencies work together rather than in isolation. We organise them within four broad areas that reflect the professional coaching and mentoring relationship.

01

Communication & Understanding

Listening, inquiry and clear communication that support understanding, reflection and meaningful dialogue.

02

Awareness & Development

Supporting self-awareness, strengths, purposeful action, autonomy and accountability for development.

03

Responsive Practice

Working flexibly and sensitively with individual needs, diversity, emotion, challenge and changing circumstances.

04

Professional Responsibility

Maintaining boundaries, ethical conduct, reflective practice, competence and continuing professional development.

Core Competencies

Competencies in Professional Practice

IGH3P® professional coaches and mentors are expected to integrate these capabilities appropriately within their professional practice.

01
Communication & Understanding

Creating Meaningful Professional Dialogue

Attentive Listening

Giving full attention to verbal and non-verbal communication while remaining alert to underlying themes, meaning and emotion.

Effective Inquiry

Using thoughtful, open and appropriately challenging questions to support exploration, reflection and new understanding.

Clear Communication

Communicating observations, questions and information clearly, sensitively and in ways appropriate to the individual.

Constructive Feedback

Offering relevant observations and feedback in a manner that supports awareness, understanding and professional or personal development.

02
Awareness & Development

Supporting Insight, Choice & Progress

Fostering Self-Awareness

Supporting individuals in recognising patterns, perspectives, beliefs, behaviours, strengths and areas for development.

Action Planning

Helping individuals translate insight and goals into realistic, purposeful and appropriately structured actions.

Empowering Individuals

Supporting autonomy, self-belief and informed decision-making rather than creating dependence on the coach or mentor.

Strengths-Based Practice

Recognising and developing existing capabilities, resources and strengths in support of meaningful progress.

Accountability & Commitment

Supporting individuals in taking appropriate ownership of agreed actions, choices and progress towards their goals.

Goal Focus & Future Direction

Helping individuals clarify meaningful outcomes and maintain constructive focus on the direction they wish to pursue.

03
Responsive Practice

Working Responsively With the Individual

Adaptability & Flexibility

Adapting the professional approach appropriately to individual needs, circumstances, preferences and emerging developments.

Cultural Competence & Sensitivity

Recognising and respecting diverse identities, backgrounds, beliefs, perspectives and experiences while supporting inclusive practice.

Emotional Awareness & Support

Responding appropriately to emotional experience while maintaining professional boundaries and working within the limits of professional competence.

Conflict Resolution

Supporting constructive communication, alternative perspectives and appropriate approaches to interpersonal challenge and disagreement.

Resilience

Supporting constructive responses to change, challenge and setbacks while remaining flexible and professionally grounded.

Professional Judgement

Applying experience, awareness and appropriate judgement while remaining attentive to context, boundaries and the needs of the individual.

04
Professional Responsibility

Maintaining Ethical & Responsible Practice

Ethics & Professionalism

Practising with integrity and in accordance with applicable ethical, professional and organisational standards.

Professional Boundaries

Establishing and maintaining appropriate boundaries, confidentiality and clarity regarding the nature and limits of the professional relationship.

Reflective Practice

Reviewing one's own practice, considering feedback and experience, and identifying opportunities for continued improvement.

Continuing Professional Development

Maintaining and developing professional knowledge, skills and competence through ongoing learning and development.

Ethical Professional Practice

Competence and Ethics Are Inseparable

Professional competence is not demonstrated by coaching technique alone. Coaches and mentors must also practise ethically, respect confidentiality and professional boundaries, recognise the limits of their competence and act responsibly towards the individuals they serve.

IGH3P® professional standards therefore operate alongside the applicable Code of Ethics and other professional conduct requirements.

Important: This page provides the professional competency framework. It does not replace the IGH3P® Code of Ethics or other applicable codes, policies and professional conduct requirements.
Standards Within Accreditation

How Professional Competence Relates to Accreditation

IGH3P® accreditation considers more than completion of training or accumulation of coaching hours. Professional assessment may consider how applicants demonstrate relevant coaching competencies, ethical awareness, professional judgement and responsible practice alongside the education, experience and continuing development required for the accreditation level sought.

Continuing Professional Responsibility

Standards Continue Beyond Accreditation

Professional competence develops throughout practice. Accredited status therefore carries an ongoing responsibility to maintain professional standards.

Maintain Competence

Practise within appropriate areas of knowledge, education, experience and professional capability.

Continue Developing

Engage in relevant continuing professional development, reflection and learning throughout professional practice.

Remain Accountable

Continue to uphold applicable ethical standards, professional responsibilities and the requirements associated with professional recognition.
